Situationship. Chances are you’ve heard the word before, in a TikTok storytime, from a friend describing her love life, or maybe you’ve reached for it yourself to name whatever this is you’re currently in.
It describes a very particular limbo with a man: past the talking stage, but nowhere close to an actual relationship, the two of you circling each other without either of you landing anywhere. You’re waiting for him to decide he’s ready to commit, to work through whatever is holding him back, to grow into the soulmate and the husband you’ve been picturing. You keep wondering if it’s worth the wait, if a little more time is all it needs before it clicks into place.
In my experience, that kind of waiting tends to come loaded with confusion, frustration, anxiety, and a distinct lack of clarity or actual progress. Women get hurt in this dynamic more often than we’d like to admit, and calling it a situationship becomes a way of pressing a bandage over an open wound, hoping the label alone will be enough to stop the bleeding and eventually turn it into a real relationship.
If any of this sounds familiar, whether it’s your story or a friend’s, keep reading. This article is here to pull that bandage off and look honestly at what a situationship actually is. We’ll unpack what it really means for you as a woman, and walk through ten signs that can tell you early on whether it’s worth your time at all.
So what is a situationship, really, and how do we end up in one?
A situationship tends to form when two people want different things from each other, say, she’s looking for something long term, he wants sex without the strings, and neither of those intentions ever gets said out loud. The silence, deflection, or mixed signals around these important questions are what create the fog.
The woman, for her part, often isn’t ready to sit with the pain of wanting a man who doesn’t want her back in the same way. So she starts building a story around his failure to commit or around his evasive answers, often at the cost of seeing clearly what’s actually in front of her.
The most valuable advice I can offer here doubles as a hard truth: if you actually want to find your soulmate, you need to build your tolerance for discomfort, and make room inside yourself for rejection and whatever pain comes with it. Avoiding that discomfort by leaning on the situationship narrative doesn’t spare you anything. It just delays the inevitable, keeping you anxious and confused for longer than necessary.
That anxiety and confusion don’t need explaining away. They’re your body telling you, plainly, that this man might not be the one. The moment you’re willing to actually feel that discomfort, it tends to pass far faster than you’d expect, and you move on that much sooner to someone who’s actually right for you.
With that said, here are ten ways your body will try to tell you early on whether a man is actually aligned with you, long before your mind finishes building a story around him. Listening to these signs can save you a considerable amount of time and pain.

- No physical attraction at all
If he doesn’t attract you physically, if being around him feels like a chore, and if he goes to touch you and your first instinct is to pull away or step back, don’t even entertain it. His great personality won’t hold here, and it doesn’t matter how good he sounds on paper. A relationship needs you to actually want him, not just tolerate him. Physical attraction should not be compromised.
- He’s too soft, and you’re the one leading
If you can feel yourself steering him, if he tries too hard to please you or molds himself around your preferences, agreeing with things he’s clearly never actually experienced just to make you happy, that’s a sign you can play him like an instrument. You end up looking down on him instead of interacting as equals. What you actually need is someone present, not someone who erases themselves to get into your good graces. - The pull feels like an addiction
If the attraction is so strong it feels like a craving, an urgency to talk to him or see him constantly, and you notice yourself breaking your sleep schedule or your routine because of him, PLEASE take a step back and figure out what’s actually pulling you in so hard. Protect your own needs first, and give yourself real time to reset after seeing him. Your connection won’t fizzle out if you don’t text or see each other every day. Notice whether he respects the space you take. If he does, that’s a good sign. If he pushes past it instead, that might be a red flag.
- Great chemistry, constant confusion
You’re attracted to him physically and intellectually, maybe even more than usual, and you’re curious about him; that’s great! But you’re also constantly on guard. You’re wondering if he’s using you, wondering if he only wants sex, unsure what his intentions actually are. No matter how good the chemistry is, if he keeps you in the fog like this, it means your intentions likely don’t match, and you might end up hurt trying to decode him or bend yourself into what he wants. If you’re confused about what he wants from you, it’s best to ask him directly. If he answers clearly and his behavior actually changes to support his answer, that’s a green flag. If he doesn’t, including if you get mixed signals, you already have your answer.
- He makes you feel unsafe, and you know it
If a man you barely know keeps steering conversations toward sex, listen to how that makes you feel. We all want sex in a relationship, but that should not be the driving force to getting to know someone. You deserve to be approached with respect. - You’re the one asking what you are
If you feel like you need to ask him what you two are, if you’re the one initiating plans or pulling the relationship forward, that’s a hard pass. When a man is actually sure about you, you won’t need to wonder. He’ll initiate and you’ll simply know. On that note, love declarations, flirting, intensity, great sex, all of it is part of connection, and all of it is allowed to just be an experience. The mistake is letting one good experience make your big decisions for you. When you are deciding if a man is right for the long run, decide based on what he does rather than what he says. Good sex does not mean he wants to be your person.

- He can’t hold your feelings
If at any point, in any conversation or conflict, you feel deeply invalidated, like he doesn’t really see you or only sees the surface, like he draws shallow conclusions about what’s going on inside you, and then excuses his own behavior with “I was just joking” or worse, “you’re too sensitive,” that’s a hard pass. You’ll likely end up having to write him essays just to be understood, and that’s a lack of emotional intelligence on his part, not a communication gap. You don’t want to stay with someone who can’t grasp that the impact their behavior had on you matters more than what they actually intended with it.
- Real obstacles, but no real conversation
If he attracts you and his intentions are clear, but there are real obstacles between you such as distance, someone else in his life, a child from another relationship, and you never actually talk it through, you just tell yourselves you’ll go with the flow, that’s a pass. Don’t accept distance or difficult circumstances on the premise that love will find a way. These things need to be discussed and resolved early, so they don’t create unnecessary suffering later. - Your values never actually come up
Have the serious conversations with him from the start. Once chemistry and physical safety are checked, the next step is checking alignment, in values, principles, and life plans. What does he actually think about the things that matter to you, and what principles does he live by? Enjoy the chemistry while it’s happening, then come back to what he actually said later, at home, once you’re calm. - He rushes the big decisions
If he tries to speed things up in any direction: sex, making it official, marriage, moving in together and it leaves you with a sense of unease or invasion, stop. For decisions that could meaningfully change the direction of your life, don’t answer on the spot, even if you’re tempted to because you like him a lot. Sleep on it. Give yourself time to sit with it, and time to actually ask yourself what’s driving the rush, for both of you. Ask him too, not as an accusation, but out of real curiosity.
One more thing before you go
If you want to actually see where your dynamic stands, we built a free two minute quiz around the three pillars of any successful romantic relationship: chemistry, safety, and alignment. Take it on whatever you’re navigating right now, or go back and run it on a situationship from your past, just to see what your body already knew back then.
Treat these ten signs as a mirror, not a verdict, and let your own discernment have the final word.
